Spying on Your Employees Texts?
Technology is changing the world, and the workplace is no exception. As a matter of fact, it is the first to have to adapt to the many changes taking place, something which resulted in the BYOD trend. And hence with mobiles, laptops and all the devices in between, the workplace is a buzzing hub of both personal and employer owned communication devices.
Of course this is great as productivity and efficiency reach new heights but the thing to be seen remains whether employers should be keeping an eye on what their employees are really doing with all those gadgets in their hands. Perhaps employee monitoring software is nothing all that new but whether an employer should go the distance is the real question.
Employees that are given company owned devices to work on are usually aware that they will be subjected to some sort of monitoring practices. Companies often block social media, pornographic, and other work deterring sites in order to improve workplace efficiency. Most companies and employers make it known that they will be recording and monitoring employee phone calls but those are on work phones or computer systems. When it comes to mobile devices, things may get a little tricky. Employee location monitoring or GPS tracking is something that is usually employed when workers have to go into the field or the job description requires a lot of travelling.
However, employers are finding it difficult to keep things running smoothly just by looking over these things. Many employers are now going full throttle and collecting data from every avenue possible- -and this includes texting. Texting has been steadily taking the world by storm and one must wonder if one can really blame employers who wish to monitor worker texts.
Text messaging is replacing phone calls as the number one method of communication all over the world. Smartphone apps that allow free cross platform texting, and further allow syncing with social media feeds and accounts are only furthering the situation. If your employees use smartphones, then there is a very high likelihood that they are keeping in touch with their friends and family as well as colleagues. Monitoring their text messages may give you the extra edge you need to keep workers in line but it also comes with some hesitations.
Using an SMS spy to monitor their messages, whether they be texts or through messaging apps means having to give them devices first. If your office follows the BYOD to work trend, then that means you’re pretty limited in the amount of monitoring and surveillance you can practice- -within the legal domain that is. The devices that you give them may contain such spy software as you are within your legal rights to do so. Of course, the catch is that you need to inform your employees that you will be monitoring their text messages as well as whatever else monitoring practices are a part of your company policy.
This does not always go over so well with employees, as they feel this is going too far. However, if you think this will help you in the long run, there is no reason why you shouldn’t!
